Sam Richards: A radical experiment in empathy (notice how different the situation is with Syria - try the empathy exercise in the appropriate context):
The problem of violence in the States is, how much can they stand. Judging by mainstream media, not very much. But judging by what's actually going on you get a completely different picture:

Disability rights activists support gun permits for the blind, bigger pants make Stephen feel thinner, and recent articles ruin the fun in dissected human cadavers.  (04:58):

Guns killing children: An American epidemic

Kids are shooting kids. Daily News study reveals shocking numbers as the gun rights battle rages on: 40 children accidentally shot by themselves or other kids since Newtown. Add in adult culprits, and there have been at least 120 kids shot dead in all.

Kids are accidentally shooting kids — siblings, friends and themselves — in a tragic trend that isn’t showing any signs of improving. At least 40 children ages 12 and under have died in accidental shootings since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, a heartbreaking statistic on premeditated crimes versus inadvertent deaths.

Article extract:

Guns and kids: the youngest casualties of America's infatuation with firearms - Dear NRA, are you really going to tell me that 'guns don't kill children; children kill children'?

The cover of the recent Children's Defense Fund report (pdf) on gun violence in the United States carries a single statistic:

The number of children and teens killed by guns in one year would fill 134 classrooms of 20 students each.

And then, there's the shameful comparison to other countries:

US children and teens are 17 times more likely to die from a gun than their peers in 25 other high-income countries combined.

Strange:

Keeping Kids From Toy Guns: How One Mother Changed Her Mind Is violent play bad? I used to think so. Then I spent some time outside of the United States.

IMO: Playing with guns is fine. It's the playing with real guns that's not fine. But I also don't think giving a toddler a BB gun is a good idea. There should be some sort of level of accomplishment of responsibility for your child to own & use a BB gun right? Then they move forward from there?

My own analysis of the gun debate, though I'm willing to make concession on the assault rifle thing for better State Militias. Though I think a 3-4 bullet cartridge for non-militia members is fine on a State level. But the American People seem pretty settled on thier views.

If not, here are some ideas:

How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?  Slate partners with @GunDeaths for an interactive, crowdsourced tally of the toll firearms have taken since Dec. 14.By Chris Kirk and Dan Kois

Update, June 19, 2013: As time goes on, our count gets further and further away from the likely actual number of gun deaths in America—because roughly 60 percent of deaths by gun are due to suicides, which are very rarely reported. When discussing this issue, please note that our number is by design not accurate and represents only the number of gun deaths that the media can find out about contemporaneously. Part of the purpose of this interactive is to point out how difficult it is to get accurate real-time numbers on this issue.

Using the most recent CDC estimates for yearly deaths by guns in the United States, it is likely that as of today, 6/28/2013, roughly 16,486 people have died from guns in the United States since the Newtown shootings. Compare that number to the number of deaths reported in the news in our interactive below, and you can see how undertold the story of gun violence in America actually is.
Picture
Looking at these huge death figures we have to wonder why people in the Media are only mentioning a few. The reality is random death and murders in the US is far more common than people like to believe.

In graphic words & images... the kind of violence American Culture seems able to live with is the equivalent of:
America chooses not to attack Syria, and Stephen gets ready to discuss the biggest initials in 20th century literature.  (03:57) :

Some of the stuff you hear in TV doesn't seem to take much into account. Here was a recent "debate:

CNN Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour flipped out on the AC360 Later Syria panel Thursday night, calling out the “false moral equivalence” of anti-interventionists. She clashed with blogger Andrew Sullivan over the emotion in the case, shouting down her fellow panelists to get a word in edgewise. After Anderson Cooper and Sullivan brought up the need to separate the emotion from the policy, Amanpour sighed and said, “I can barely contain myself at this point.” She proceeded to go on a rant about the “false moral equivalence” in arguing against going in.

“How many more times do we have to say that weapons of mass destruction were used, and as bad as it is to decapitate somebody, it is by no means equal. We can’t use this false moral equivalence about what’s going on right now. They tried to do it in the second World War, they tried to do it in Bosnia, they tried to do it in Rwanda, and they’re trying to do it now. There is no moral equivalence.”

When the others tried to jump in, Amanpour shouted, “Wait just a second!” She firmly argued that Obama simply cannot allow Assad to get away with using chemical weapons, noting how Bill Clinton is still apologizing for Rwanda. Sullivan jumped in to say, “This is not reason, this is emotion.” Amanpour fired back, “It’s not emotion. This is history coming out.”

They clashed over whether turning away from such terrible crimes is sometimes in America’s national interests, while Charles Blow accused Amanpour of painting a “false choice” about not caring about dead kids and not wanting to bomb Syria. She cried, “Nobody’s saying that! You’re playing rhetorical games!”

The legend of "Achilles" ended when this happened. Which was part 2 to this. This series isn't a particularly accurate portrayal of events. Nor is it technically a "legend".  The posts in this series should suffice for the 2014 and 2016 elections as the GOP is using the same strategies (the strategies may get sneakier but they can't change as they are made by a small group of old and/or insecure rich white guys and their needs will always remain the same). Though the 2014 elections have already been decided .

Note: Going by this play book, minus election fraud, Hillary wins in 2016. All Democrats have to do to win is make sure there is no election fraud. Let the South go though, they are in denial. (Rand Paul makes it to GOP Nominee providing no election fraud in the GOP primary) . I'm done. Moving on.

WEB EXTRA: Rape in the military, Part 2:
By Mick Krever, CNN - It is not every day that the man in charge of all of America’s Air Force calls a modest sergeant. Which is why Jennifer Smith was so surprised to get General Mark Welsh’s call.

Sgt. Smith had filed a formal complaint alleging sexual assault and harassment, which she said had gone on for years. When she finally revealed the assault to her superior officers, after years of keeping it a secret, she expected the Air Force to act.

“I was so caught off-guard by the fact that he called me, and considering who he is, and I know my place, I said, ‘Yes, sir. Well thank you for calling me.’”

“He just said that he was going to do the best that he could,” Smith told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday.

But as far as Sgt. Smith is concerned, the phone call, and all the conversations with her superior officers that led up to it, have amounted to nothing.

“They know the case,” she said, “but as far as I’m concerned, nothing has been done.”

The fact that Smith reported the assault, one of several she suffered, was in itself a rarity.

According to the recent documentary “The Invisible War,” about rape in the military, 33% of sexual assaults are not reported because the victim’s superior officers is a friend of the assailant. And 25% are not reported because the superior officer is himself the assailant.

“I kind of didn’t tell anyone,” Sgt. Smith said. “I came back, went to work the next day like nothing happened, and buried it.”

Sgt. Smith said she knew many people who were assaulted. But for many like Smith, who is a 17-year-veteran of the Air Force, they feel like they have invested too much in their careers to jeopardize it by reporting assault.

Often, the harassment comes in a seemingly more benign, but just as destructive, form.

Sgt. Smith was compiling a report from files on a shared server when she came across a songbook with explicitly pornographic lyrics.

The page read, “F*** songs and Trash Tunes.”

“The reason that I didn’t come forward was because of stuff like this,” she said. “I just didn’t think that it would be taken care of or taken seriously.”

The pornography seemed like it was almost de rigueur for the Air Force.

But the event that truly changed Sgt. Smith happened while she was stationed in Balad, Iraq.

“I was assaulted by an Army personnel and he basically just grabbed and threw me up against the wall,” she said. “When I came back from Iraq I was different. That time was very different because it was so aggressive and it was so hostile.”

After some time back in the U.S., her husband convinced her that she needed to seek medical help, and come forward to her Air Force superiors. She was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Regarding her complaint she said, “I started at the lowest level of the chain, and went all the way to the top.”

Sgt. Smith is a 17-year veteran of the Air Force, and has come forward with her story just a few years shy of being able to retire with full pension and benefits.

“My father was in Vietnam,” Sgt. Smith told Amanpour. “And I remember coming home when I was a junior in high school and saying, ‘Dad, I think I want to join the army or the Marine Corps.’ And he said, ‘No, honey, we’re going to take you down to the Air Force recruiter, because you’ll be safe there.’”

As Stephen Colbert explains: "You might not be aware of this, but in 1920 women got the right to vote. And since then, among likely voters rape's approval rating has plummeted." Suggesting to the GOP that women's right to vote is the reason for their non-compliance with thier wishes!

From The Huff-ington Post: Stephen has advice for his fellow conservatives who think it might be a good idea to approach the subject of rape in a public forum: Just, don't. Ever. At all. And if you're tempted, just ram a pencil in your eye until you rid yourself of the idea that caveman ideas about sexual assault have any place in the public discourse.

Strategy "Team Rape" Is Using:

Picture

Watch this woman demonstrate how this tactic works...

Even the women can't be trusted to protect other women from policies that are pro-rapists (they will say anything to win an argument, tell any lie)...

Notice how this old expressionless woman (or worn out by being in the GOP?) on the GOP-Republican payroll is caught lying (or "speaking from the heart" i.e. making up truths cause they think it will help them) and doesn't even flinch. They are trained well! (Bet the next one flinches are they start mixing and matching reactions!)

Kellyanne Conway's sex-selective abortion statements on AC360

Tonight on AC360° guest Kellyanne Conway stated, "You've got all these little baby girls being killed just because they're girls in this country.” Conway added, "We should look at the Guttmacher Institute statistics to really illuminate us on that. But it does, it does occur because there's so much science now, people can, they can know the gender of their baby and they make their choices accordingly."

AC360 checked into the Guttmacher Institute information about sex-selective abortion. This is the information on their website:http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/gpr/15/2/gpr150218.html

“…What is conclusively known is that the U.S. sex ratio at birth in 2005 stood at 105 boys to 100 girls, squarely within biologically normal parameters. Beyond that salient fact, two studies using 2000 U.S. census data to examine sex ratios among Chinese-, Indian- and Korean-American families found that although the ratio for first-born children in such families was normal, there was evidence of son preference in second- and third-order births, if the older children were daughters. Notably, the authors do not pinpoint the cause of the disparate ratios—whether prepregnancy techniques involving fertility treatments or sex-selective abortions. In addition, they comment that these three ethnic communities constitute a very small proportion—less than 2%—of the U.S. population. A third analysis that supporters of PRENDA rely on is a small-scale qualitative study involving interviews with 65 immigrant Indian women who practiced sex selection, either before pregnancy or during pregnancy through an abortion. Many of these women spoke of the social and cultural basis for son preference and the intense pressure faced by women in their communities to produce sons…"
Despite dodges, Romney, Ryan haunted by extremist record
Rachel Maddow points out the clear political and policy connections between the Romney ticket and the extreme, absolutist anti-abortion movement, and encourages the political media to hold Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to account for their legislative deeds and political associations instead of taking them at their word as they try to distance themselves from their own record...

News Report: Strict new Arizona abortion laws decree pregnancy begins TWO WEEKS before conception

Arizona lawmakers have drawn up strict new abortion laws... that decree pregnancy begins two weeks before conception.

Final legislative approval was given to a bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, handing Republicans their latest win in ongoing national efforts to impose greater restrictions on abortion.

But the bill defines a foetus' gestational age 'as calculated from the first day of the last [mother's] menstrual period'.
This would mean, given that a woman does not produce eggs until a fortnight after her period, a baby can be terminated two weeks before it was conceived.

The bill says Arizona would '[p]rohibit abortions at or after twenty weeks of gestation, except in cases of a medical emergency, based on the documented risks to women’s health and the strong medical evidence that unborn children feel pain during an abortion at that gestational age.'

The bill now goes to the state's Republican governor for approval. If the bill is enacted, the state would join six others that have put similar late-term abortion bans in place in the past two years based on hotly debated medical research suggesting that a fetus feels pain starting at 20 weeks of gestation.

Georgia lawmakers approved a similar bill in March that now awaits the signature of Republican Governor Nathan Deal.

'The chief purpose of government is to protect life and liberty, and this bill does just that,' said Cathi Herrod, the president of the conservative Center for Arizona Policy, adding that the bill aimed to 'protect the life of a woman considering an abortion as well as the life of her pre-born child.'

Matthew Benson, a spokesman for Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, said she had a 'strong and consistent pro-life record,' but she has not yet publicly announced her position on the bill.

While barring most late-term abortions, the Arizona law would allow them in situations where continuing a pregnancy risks death or would 'create serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.'

This would be determined by a physician's 'good faith clinical judgment.'

Bryan Howard, the president of Planned Parenthood Arizona, said the bill and several others sent to the governor continued an 'unprecedented attack' on women and their healthcare in recent years.

Howard said the ban 'completely prevents couples from making their own decisions about how to deal with the heartbreaking situation when a pregnancy is determined to involve serious health complications.' He said the law could also drive badly needed medical professionals from the state. Only a small number of abortions are performed in Arizona after 20 weeks.

The U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortions nationwide in 1973 but allowed states to ban the procedure after the time when the fetus could survive outside the womb, unless the pregnancy risked the woman's health.

In addition to banning most late-term abortions, the bill would also require women to have an ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to an abortion, instead of the one hour that is currently mandated under state law.

Additionally, state officials would be required to create a website that details such items as the risks of the procedure and shows pictures of the fetus in various stages.

Representative Katie Hobbs, a Phoenix Democrat, called the measure another example of how conservative Tea Party lawmakers are 'too extreme and too focused on their rigid ideology.'

'This bill ignores the health risks that some women face during pregnancy and pushes an extremist agenda,' said Hobbs, moments after the vote.

'There are serious medical implications associated with this legislation. I urge the governor to veto this bill.'

After Akin, GOP Makes Extreme Abortion Policy Official
In what will probably strike many people as a monumentally tone-deaf move, the GOP plans to include a plank in its 2012 platform calling for an amendment that would outlaw abortions under any circumstance. CNN reported on the draft language it obtained on Monday night, and the platform committee approved it on Tuesday:
"Faithful to the 'self-evident' truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed," the draft platform declares. "We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."

There is only so much a woman can take...
Notice that at 1 minute and 25 seconds Romney was FOR Abortion and then Became Governor and became against abortion (he has a very long record of not keeping his words... calling these "flip-flops' is being way way way too nice to his past! (though this CNN documentary takes a major step forward).

Information About The "Moderate" That The GOP Stood Behind Without Question For Many Months:

From Huffington Post: Mitt Romney Vetoed Contraception Bill For Rape Victims As Governor

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney artfully dodged a question about whether states have the right to ban birth control during Saturday's Republican presidential debate, calling the question "silly" and saying that states wouldn't want to do that anyway. But as governor of Massachusetts in 2005, Romney took a harder line on contraception, vetoing a widely supported bill that would make the morning-after pill available over the counter in that state and require hospitals to offer emergency contraception to rape victims.

His surprising veto did not stand. The Massachusetts state Senate voted unanimously to overrule it, and the state House voted 139-16 to do the same.

Romney tried to explain his controversial act by arguing in a Boston Globe op-ed that he did it in order to keep a campaign promise not to change Massachusetts' abortion laws. But the scientific community and longstanding federal policy agree that the morning-after pill cannot end a pregnancy once it has begun.

Mitt Romney making money from aborted fetuses (i.e. dead pre-born babies):

Romney Invested in Medical-Waste Firm That Disposed of Aborted Fetuses, Government Documents Show And these documents challenge Romney's claim that he left Bain Capital in early 1999. Earlier this year, Mitt Romney nearly landed in a politically perilous controversy when the Huffington Post reported that in 1999 the GOP presidential candidate had been part of an investment group that invested $75 million in Stericycle, a medical-waste disposal firm that has been attacked by anti-abortion groups for disposing aborted fetuses collected from family planning clinics. Coming during the heat of the GOP primaries, as Romney tried to sell South Carolina Republicans on his pro-life bona fides, the revelation had the potential to damage the candidate's reputation among values voters already suspicious of his shifting position on abortion.

From Mother Jones: "Under Ryan's pro-life bill, a rapist could go to court and prevent his victim from getting an abortion."

The economics of this situation is in this hip-hop video, towards the end...

Fight of the Century, Keynes vs. Hayek from Seo on Vimeo.

At the end of the above video, where you see "cronies" lighting cigars with money i.e. the rich people giving each other money while starving the rest of the country (i.e. war is profitable, especially when you starve everyone else to squeeze out every penny, i.e. the last past). Also, don't fear the boom & the bust. There are much bigger problems to deal with - such as the ones outlined in this series - before we start fine tuning decades of economics. Especially since the new economists got dumber.

Notes:

Economics perspective example video: Manufacturing jobs have become more specialized requiring less labor and more technical expertise.

Pointless expenditures: $1.2 trillion for an outdated plan that doesn't work! = "In fact, the entire $1.2 trillion dollars that the sequester is supposed to save could be realized by cutting one unneeded, wasteful boondoggle: the $1.5 trillion F-35 fighter program. The F-35, billed as the next generation all-purpose military fighter and bomber, has been an unmitigated disaster. Its performances in recent tests have been so bad that the Pentagon has been forced to dumb-down the criteria. It is overweight, overpriced, and unwieldy. It is also an anachronism: we no longer face the real prospect of air-to-air combat in this era of 4th generation warfare. The World War II mid-air dogfight era is long over" http://the-free-foundation.org/tst3-3-2013.html

Video: Senator Bernie Sanders also thinks sending manufacturing jobs abroad is bad economic policy (as he argues here against Alan Greenspan)

Ron Paul Video: There are "900 bases in 150 countries"

From The Economist: Indeed, the one lesson that can be drawn from the data is that today's strategic priorities can shape deployments for decades to come, long after the original reason for putting G.I.s in a particular region has gone.

On Paul Ryan's "Plan":

Paul Ryan Finally Meets a Budget Cut He Hates Paul Ryan is a budget hawk's budget hawk, never one to believe a government bureaucrat who self-servingly claims that a spending cut will cause real damage to his program and the people it benefits. But there are exceptions:

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) expressed skepticism Thursday that U.S. military leaders were being honest in their budget requests to Congress. “We don’t think the generals are giving us their true advice,” Ryan said during a forum on the budget sponsored by the National Journal. "We don't think the generals believe their budget is really the right budget."

"You don't believe the generals?" [managing editor Kristin] Roberts asked.
"What I believe is this budget does hollow out defense," Ryan responded...."I think there’s a lot of budget smoke and mirrors in the Pentagon’s budget," Ryan added, saying his proposal was an "honest Pentagon budget." Just to be absolutely clear here: if we're talking about a program that helps the poor or the elderly or the sick, Ryan is eager to cut spending. In fact, he's usually eager to be the biggest budget cutter in the room. But if it's a program for the military, he won't accept spending cuts even if the military brass supports them. In fact, he insists on raising their budget. For some reason, this is known in mainstream circles as being a "deficit hawk."

i.e. What Paul Ryan is doing is taking a sledgehammer to everything not involved with bombing others - i.e. Conservatives Seem To Like Only Two Options: War Or Austerity!

Notice that Fox News doesn't have a problem with spending for war JUST spending on the American people. In other words, they have offered only two choices, so far, on their political platform and goals. War &/or austerity. That explains the GOP-Congress's position doesn't it? They have opposed spending for everything, including to increase jobs, because with jobs how will they get recruits for another war? Scheduled time for the new war? When the GOP returns to complete power, of course.
